The first season became a global breakout, drawing in crime fans far beyond Scandinavia. More than 33 million viewers worldwide followed the chilling murder investigations set against the snowy landscapes of Åre.
Netflix confirmed the renewal in a Swedish Instagram post, announcing that “The Åre Murders season 2 is back with two new cases for Hanna and Daniel. Coming to Netflix in 2026.”
Carla Sehn (”Diary of a Ditched Girl”) and Kardo Razzazi (”The Last Viking”) will once again lead the series as Hanna Ahlander and Daniel Lindskog, in what has become one of the most talked-about Swedish TV dramas of the year.
Season one was based on crime novelist Viveca Sten’s popular novels “Hidden in Snow” and “Hidden in the Shadows.” Netflix has not yet revealed which stories will be adapted next.
Sten has written a total of five novels centered on the Åre police, meaning there is plenty of material left. Three books remain unadapted:
- “Hidden in Lies,” about six party-loving students who travel to Åre for a ski trip — with deadly consequences.
- “Hidden in Mercy,” which follows a string of mysterious deaths that appear to target elderly residents in the Åre area.
- “Hidden in Guilt,” set just before Easter, when businesswoman Charlotte Wretlind is found murdered in her suite at the Copperhill Mountain Lodge.
With more icy mysteries still to explore, “The Åre Murders” looks set to remain one of Netflix’s strongest Nordic crime series.
