The five-part Swedish crime thriller “Blood Sacrifice” has arrived on Netflix, bringing its central murder investigation to a close while leaving the door open for the story to continue.
No second season has been officially announced, but stars Jakob Oftebro and Peter Andersson suggest that another chapter is already under consideration.
“I think they have a plan. We’ll see how it goes,” Oftebro told MovieZine.se.
“It’s being discussed, you could say. But nothing has been decided,” Andersson added.
Created by “Lupin” and “Hijack” writer George Kay, “Blood Sacrifice” follows Stockholm detective Thomas Berg (Oftebro) as he investigates a string of brutal murders targeting police officers. To crack the case, he reluctantly turns to his estranged father Alfred (Andersson), a troubled former detective whose instincts prove difficult to ignore.
While the central case is resolved by the end of the season, the fractured relationship between Thomas and Alfred gives the series room to expand beyond its initial five episodes.
Andersson said a second season could further explore the family’s past, potentially giving a larger role to Alfred’s ex-wife and Thomas’ mother, played by Marie Richardson.
“You have to hope they add something new, perhaps a new character,” Andersson said. “And Jakob’s mother and my ex-wife could become more involved and tell us more about our relationship.”
“There needs to be something to build on beyond an exciting crime, and that is the relationships between the characters,” he continued. “There is potential there. George would have to answer that, but I think he would enjoy making another season. He has more material to work with now.”
Kay confirmed that “Blood Sacrifice” was conceived with the possibility of continuing.
“The series was designed to be able to return, if we’re lucky enough to get the chance. Absolutely,” Kay told MovieZine.
For the British writer, the show’s long-term potential lies less in its murders than in the volatile bond between its two leads.
“Long-running television series often have a love story at their center. We have one here too,” Kay said. “The only question is whether these two men can stay together and find a way not to shout at each other.”
“Beneath all of that, there is great affection,” he added. “That is the story we’re telling: a love story between a father and son.”
Netflix has not yet renewed “Blood Sacrifice” for a second season. All five episodes are now streaming.
